General Notes
- Very important – This calculator is meant to give you a rough, ballpark estimate of your pet’s daily (per 24 hours) caloric needs. Specific requirements can vary with up to 50% based on a wide variety of factors such as breed, individual genetics and variation, activity level, and general health status.
- No matter if you want your animal to lose, gain, or maintain their weight, you always needs to monitor the weight over time and adjust the daily calories as needed. Is your pet not losing weight when you want them to? Then very likely they need to eat less calories – regardless of what the calculator says.

How it Works
- The calculator first estimates your pet’s Resting Energy Requirement (RER). The RER are the calories required to power the basic functions of the body (respiration, circulation, digestion, etc). The RER is calculated by taking your animals body weight (in kilograms), raising it to the power of 3/4, and multiplying by 70.
- Or in equation form: 70 x (kg^3/4)
- The RER is then multiplied by a factor corresponding to your pet’s approximate life-stage. For example, a 10kg growing puppy should be eating more calories than a 10kg senior dog on a weight loss plan! This gives the estimate of the total calories your pet should be eating per 24 hours.
This calculator is meant to give you a rough, ballpark estimate of your pet’s daily (per 24 hours) caloric needs.
