How Does the Dog Age Calculator Work?

The dog age calculator uses the formula developed by researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine which is more accurate than the ‘multiply by 7’ method.

Based on their findings, you may calculate a dog’s age to human years by multiplying the natural logarithm of the dog’s age by 16 and adding 31: (human_age = 16ln(dog_age) + 31).

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, dog age is calculated according to the following data:

  • The first year of a medium-sized dog’s life is equal to 15 human years.
  • The second year for a dog is equal to 9 human years.
  • After that, each human year is approximately five years for a dog.

This formula is quite complex, hence, the dog age calculator does the work for you! Give it a try and find out how old your dog is in human years and whether your dog is a puppy, an adult, or a senior.

Using the calculator to estimate your dog’s age in human years is a fun way of learning more about your furry baby. However, understanding how old your dog is and how they age can help you know how to better care for them and when it is the right time to do it.
